Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)—especially effective for those who haven’t found relief with medication or traditional therapy.
How TMS Works
TMS uses gentle, repetitive magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain—most commonly the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)—that regulate mood. This stimulation helps rebalance neural activity and reduce symptoms of depression.
FDA-Approved Indications
TMS has received FDA clearance for the treatment of:
-
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Approved in 2008 for adults who haven’t responded to antidepressant medications, including those suffering from anxious depression and late-life depression.
-
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Cleared in 2018 for adults with treatment-resistant OCD.
-
Smoking Cessation: Approved in 2020 to aid in quitting smoking.
